"Die Perfektion der Technik" von Friedrich Georg Jünger. Neuauflage bei Klostermann

 The republication mentioned below back in January of "The Failure of Technology", the English translation of F.G.Jünger's "Die Perfektion der Technik", is apparently not going to happen.  So, until someone does republish it, I feel little guilt in publicizing this downloadable scanned version I found on the web in Google Documents.

It is worth every minute of your time, every calorie of your effort. If the powers that control our material world could understand half as much as he did, we'd be on the way to a real solution - and had they understood it back when he wrote this prescient book in 1949, we would be in half as much trouble today environmentally, economically and to some degree even spiritually....

A while ago, in the context of the BP environmental disaster, I wrote about this fantastic book of Ernst Jünger´s brother Friedrich Georg Jünger  - in English published as "The Failure of Technology". I am in such awe of the insights in this book that I must spread the news of its republication in German ... if it leads to just one other person reading it seriously.

Alethes Press had plans to republish it in English in spring 2010 - but I never heard any more about it - I hope they are still in business. In any case, keep your eyes open for this one; new or used, it is a secret treasure!

Noch einmal zu Ernst Jünger. Der hatte einen jüngeren Bruder, Friedrich Georg, Lyriker Erzähler und Essayist - und der ist zu Unrecht fast vergessen. Die Lektüre seines Buches über die Perfektion der Technik sei nicht nur jenen empfohlen, denen bereits aufgefallen ist, dass auch Naturschützer die Natur zerstören können oder dass etwas mit Julian Assange nicht stimmen könnte. Friedrich Georg Jünger entlarvt sowohl die Ideologien von Klasse und Rasse als auch die der Technik als reine Überbauphänomene, als Legitimationssysteme mit schrecklichem Sinn und gnadenlosem Verstand. Er war da nicht der erste, auch nicht der einzige. Max Horkheimer und Ludwig Klages, Günther Anders und Oswald Spengler sind hier Vorläufer und Mit-Denker. Der Wahn des aufklärerischen Totalitarismus liegt in seiner Hoffnung auf die Technik. Die Beziehung zwischen Mensch und Technik wird hier nicht nur dialektisch, sondern, schlimmer noch, konspirativ. Die Technik legitimiert sich als Handlanger des Menschen und verwandelt damit den Menschen zum Handlanger der Technik. Konkret gesagt: die schönen kleinen Apps, die jeder sich billig auf sein iPhone laden kann, verflechten den Nutzer in ein universales System kommerzieller, politischer, beliebiger Verwertung. Der Mensch wird zum "dot com".
