After creating the English subtitles for the new ARTE/rbb documentary on Jünger I spent some time reuploading some of the older documentaries and discussions already on my channel, but in unified and not split form.

Nachdem ich die englischen Untertitel für die neue ARTE / rbb-Dokumentation auf Jünger erstellt hatte, habe ich einige Zeit damit verbracht, die älteren Dokumentarfilme und Gespräche, die sich bereits auf meinem Kanal befanden, erneut hochzuladen, jedoch in einheitlicher und nicht aufgeteilter Form.

Here's a decent documentary film on the German Goethe Prize author Ernst Jünger, produced by rbb/ARTE. i went to considerable trouble to create good English subtitles - hope they'll allow more non-German speakers to learn something of this remarkable thinker.

One of the better documentaries on Ernst Jünger, this relatively more balanced production is unfortunately only a partial picture - and not in the sense of being skewed by the usual ignorance level and prejudices - but because it barely covers until 1960, until his move to Wilflingen.

It thus entirely leaves out the critical mature works and themes of Jünger: Eumeswil and the anarch, the Forest Flight (Der Waldgang), The Wall of Time (An der Zeitmauer), Aladdin's Problem, Approaches: Drugs and Inebriation, and much more. In this respect, we optimisticslly view it as Part One, and hope for at least a Part Two to come.

The film presents contrasting views on Jünger from Germanistic professors and other experts. The fairest and most informed contributions come - quite logically - from the two real experts, his recent biographers Heimo Schwilk and Helmuth Kiesel. Some of the other "experts" voice the usual cliched complaints but then almost visibly reluctantly admit his literary greatness. Naturally, it is a simplification of a highly complex person, but perhaps more should not be expected in one hour, given the length and eventfulness of Jünger's life and the complexity of his thought.

"Neunzig Verweht" Jünger docu - now with English subtitles!

The popular Jünger documentary "Neunzig Verweht" has been given English subtitles and is now available along with the original German version on my Youtube channel, ErnstJuengerAnarch.

On behalf of non-German speaking fans of Ernst Jünger's work, many thanks go out to Stefan Jarl, who took on the tedious but evidently gratifying job of transcribing and then translating the German dialogue.

* If anyone else has Jünger videos or old VHS tapes archived somewhere, I'd be happy to convert and upload them to what is certainly now the largest collection of Jünger videos on the net.

Baden-Badener "Dichterclub" über Ernst Jünger - 1995

Ich lass die Literaten selbst reden - Hochhut und Herhaus mindestens haben was richtiges mitzuteilen. (Und ich bedanke mich bei Holger, der mir die originale VHS Aufnahme geschickt hat!)

(Wenig überraschend, dass für Theweleit nur die "Annäherungen. Drogen und Rausch" interessant sind.  Nur in diesem Bereich sieht er aus, als ob auch er vielleicht etwas Erfahrung hat ;-).  Aber in den anderen Bereichen in denen er den Kritiker spielt, bleibt er, wie so viele andere, ein reiner Theoretiker - wenn er vorschreibt, wie man sich im Kriege ethisch verhalten soll, spricht er einfach aus der pazifistischen Theorie und nicht in Bezug auf den konkreten Fall Jünger, etwa in Paris.

Warum müssen die Mehrheit sich immer so berechenbar verhalten?! Ein gepflegter Aristokrat wie Jünger, der über Jahrzehnten mit allerlei Drogen experimentiert, ist dagegen kein Klischee....)

One Man's War - Ernst Jünger in Paris

I just found this excellent documentary (in 8 parts)  juxtaposing Ernst Jünger´s life in Paris (via citations from his WWII Paris diaries "Strahlungen") with Vichy propaganda shorts and other film footage from the same years. On the one hand, the typical illusions of mass propaganda, with its simplistic facade of normality, its one-sided righteousness, its certainty in the evilness of the enemy and in the march to victory despite everything; all this spiced with a trite wit completely of out touch with the awful reality. On the other hand, Jünger's impartiality, his honest concise depictions of the real horrors, of the futility of it all, but also of the small moments of true humanity that emerge in wartime. At moments, his words also reflect his superior vision of the metahistorical significance of what was really coming to pass, above and behind not only the propagandistic illusions but also the material "reality of the day".

Incidentally, Jünger himself knew of this film, as a short passage from The Details of Time: Conversations with Ernst Jünger reveals. In those conversations with Julian Hervier, he only indicates that he had given the director Cozarinsky permission to make the film and in retrospect had no reason to regret the decision. Indeed - it is well done and provides excellent context for Jünger's difficult and yet enriching experience in occupied Paris. A big bonus: it has English subtitles with mostly decent translations of the Strahlungen citations.

Neunzig Verweht - Dokumentarfilm über Ernst Jünger (1985)

Einen guten Dokumentarfilm von 1985 über Ernst Jünger habe ich kürzlich entdeckt - "90 Verweht" heißt er in Andeutung auf dem 90 Geburtstag Ernst Jüngers in selbem Jahr.  Eigentlich gefällt mir dieses besser als das andere, das man schon langem im Internet finden kann (Ich widerspreche mir nicht, 1977).

"102 Years in the heart of Europe: a portrait of Ernst Jünger"

It is in Swedish, but the interviews with Jünger are in the original German, and they are a significant part of the whole. Enjoy, it is as good as I expected!

This looks to be a very interesting documentary from Sweden. If anyone knows where this can be seen or purchased, I´d appreciate the tip!!

German writer Ernst Jünger was born and lived in what has been the centre of European power, culture, politics and science for virtually the entire 20th century. Jünger fought in the first world war and received Germany’s highest military decoration from Hindenburg in 1918; he discussed politics with Goebbels and Brecht in Berlin in the ‘20s and art with Picasso during the Second World War; he conspired against Hitler and tried LSD in 1950. The news footage in the film becomes a commentary on Jünger’s life and writings, as contradictory and controversial as the history of the century.

It begins in a rather cliched manner ("Er war ein Mann der Kälte ....") but the real value here is listening to Martin Walser talk in shining words about Ernst Jünger´s value for people today.

Ernst Jünger's readership - more eclectic than you think!

What this guy understands about Ernst Jünger's thought, I cannot judge - he only reads from one of his books here. But I give him the benefit of the doubt, since he has picked one of Jünger´s last, most metaphysical works, Die Schere (The Scissors, untranslated into English). 

The video also clearly shows that Jünger readers come in all shapes and colors!!

(Apparently Joschka Fischer also read Jünger, from Fischer´s left-wing student days all the way through to the year Jünger won the Goethe Prize. He then even defended Jünger´s right to receive it. I might post this letter sometime.)

Ernst Jünger documentary - "Ich widerspreche mir nicht." (3SAT, 1977)

Not a bad documentary on Ernst Jünger, consisting for once - thank goodness! - mostly of him speaking, and not others commenting on him. All five parts are below.
