L’intervento si propone di tematizzare la questione filosofica della fortuna nell’opera di Ernst Jünger. Sebbene il tema possa apparire marginale nella produzione dell’autore tedesco, si intende evidenziare come esso funga da sottotesto alla sua intera riflessione, preparando un terreno fecondo all’elaborazione di una difesa teoretica – oltreché esistenziale – rispetto agli eccessi di volontarismo che talora emergono nella prosa jüngeriana. La fortuna è infatti intesa da Jünger come quella dimensione feconda entro cui il singolo viene a contatto con la sovrabbondanza gratuita proveniente dal mondo originario delle forme. Dove l’uomo abbandona la propria soggettività egoica per incontrare l’alterità del mondo, qui entra in contatto con i ritmi cosmici che conducono all’apertura del mistero ineffabile. E, così, alla rivelazione della fortuna del singolo.

Passando in rassegna diversi loci dell’opera jüngeriana e sottolineandola stretta connessione fra la nozione di fortuna e le implicazioni metafisiche espresse in Al muro del tempo, si arriverà a prospettare una possibile ermeneutica di continuità rispetto alla conversione dell’autore al cattolicesimo, alla luce del tema della Grazia.

Ernst Junger: a man for all cultures?

EU-funding helped scholar Christophe Fricker restart his academic career and link it up with his experiences in the business world. His research has shed new light on the life and writing of controversial German author Ernst Junger.

Jünger had written some 50 volumes of diaries, novels, stories and essays by the time he died in 1998 at the age of 102. Along the way he received praise and honours as a master stylist and early analyst of social and technological networks, while being denounced by others as a German nationalist and Nazi apologist.

Fricker stepped into this divide with the help of a Marie Curie Fellowship grant and came down on the side of Jünger as a man who valued all cultures. The Fellowship allowed Fricker to break new ground in understanding Jünger through research into the author’s extensive travel writing and other documents.
